Trends in E-Learning

"The market in Canada is still young, at $240 million per year, but is following trends in the U.S., where E-Learning has been developing for about four years ... Growth forecasts peg the industry at 54 per cent growth annually between 2000 and 2005, IDC research shows.

Businesses are exploring this method of skills training to save costs and allow greater flexibility for employees to take the courses on their own schedules in any environment. Mr. Lau says travel and security concerns since Sept. 11, coupled with less costly, but effective, alternatives, have contributed to the rapid growth. "You've basically levelled the playing field for people who may not have the flexibility to travel," Mr. Lau says."

"Canada's first fully online elementary school started classes yesterday, enabling children as young as four to play a computerized trombone for a music lesson and participate in chat rooms during recess.

LinkonLearning.com, certified by Ontario's Ministry of Education as a private school, opened with about 25 students paying $400 for a full year of courses, as an alternative for parents unhappy with the public system or looking for an affordable form of tutoring."
