The following are courses and workshops that may be offered in the Fall, Winter or Spring Sessions. Please consult the Algonquin College website for information about availability. If you form a group of sufficient size, it may be possible to make special arrangements for a course or workshop that is not being offered in a particular semester. Likewise, if you form a group of sufficient size that wishes a course on topic not yet listed in the college catalogue, please contact me (at the email address at end of this page) providing details, and I will explore the possibilities of offering the course at Algonquin College.

Photoshop for Photographers                         

Adobe Photoshop is recognized as the de facto standard software for image editing. Participants will learn how to scan images and transfer images from digital cameras and other sources to their workstation. Through demonstrations and class assignments, participants will learn how to correct, manipulate, enhance and combine digitalized photographic images. Specific topics will include: contrast control, colour balance correction, dodging/burning, cloning, special effects, etc. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of masks and layers, to select, manipulate, then combine parts of one image with another. Specific techniques for retouching and restoration of damaged photographs, adding text to an image and preparing images for printing and use on the web will also be covered.

Note: This course requires an adequate knowledge of Microsoft Windows and basic practical knowledge and experience in photography.

Digital Photography
for the Workplace                         

Digital Photography for the Workplace is a course designed for anyone who uses photography to communicate information and ideas. Its goal is to provide the participant with practical knowledge of digital photography at a level of sophistication to make highly effective visual statements. Starting from the basic concepts and the technology of digital photography and the attributes and functions digital cameras and scanners, the participant will learn to use advanced techniques to capture digital images and how to prepare and manipulate the images using a variety of computer equipment and software. The use of layout, composite images, scripting/storyboarding, sequences and serial images will be explored, as well as techniques for audio-visual presentation and use on the Web.

Note: This course requires an adequate knowledge of Microsoft Windows and basic practical knowledge and experience in digital photography and photo editing.

Introduction to Digital Photography

These workshops will explain the basic concepts and the technology of digital photography and all the attributes and functions of your digital camera. You will spend a day photographing, testing your camera and doing practical exercises to discover the peculiarities and possibilities of digital photography. This will be followed by an morning of appreciation and study of your work and a demonstration of computer how to correct and modify images and prepare them for output as inkjet prints or for use on the internet.

A three-day initiation to digital photography and making images of the urban landscape of the the Byward Market area! The first day you will familiarize yourself with all the functions of your digital camera and learn picture taking technique adapted to the urban environment. The following day you will experiment with your camera and do practical exercises to discover the peculiarities and possibilities of digital photography as you explore the rich urban environment of the architecture, people and activities of the Byward Market. The following weekend you will colletively study your work and make an appreciation your photographs. You will also learn how to correct and modify images and how to print and use them on the internet.

The following day you will experiment with your camera and do practical exercises to discover the peculiarities and possibilities of digital photography as you explore Fall Colours in the Gatineau Park. The McKenzie King Estate offers a wide variety of landscape, vegitation, architecture and possiblities for pictures of people and activities. The following weekend you will colletively study your work, make an appreciation your photographs. You will also learn how to correct and modify images and how to print and use them on the internet.

A three-day initiation to digital photography and how to photograph the Canadian winter! The first day you will familiarize yourself with all the functions of your digital camera and learn picture taking technique adapted to the winter photography. The following day you will experiment with your camera and do practical exercises to discover the peculiarities and possibilities of digital photography as you explore the activities of the Ottawa Winterlude Festival. Photograph the snow and ice sculptures, cultural exhibitions, sports and a wide variety of social activities at the various Winterlude sites. The following weekend you will colletively study your work, make an appreciation your photographs. You will also learn how to correct and modify images and how to print and use them on the internet.

You will learn to how to select appropriate equipment, how to travel securely, how to develop new attitudes to aesthetic, social, and psychological elements of travel photography. The following day you will explore Ottawa is if you were an unfamilliar traveller, to experiment with your camera and do exercises to develop your own vision and technique for digital photography.
