DartRight.gif (280 bytes)Are there any additional tests I have to take in order to qualify for admission to the Child and Youth Worker Program?
Beyond a grade 12 diploma or its equivalent, you are asked to complete an English test (Grade 12 level) and 80 hours of volunteer work. (see below)
As part of the admission process, you are strongly urged to complete an 80 hour volunteer placement within a recognized social agency or school. You can volunteer with any age group as long as you are targeting those clients who have above average needs ex. persons with special needs, the elderly. High School Co-ops are acceptable. Remember that you cannot be "filing" or doing other clerical work. You must be working directly with clients.
The main purpose of this pre-program placement is to gauge your readiness for the program. During your selected placement, you will identify a contact person who will complete a questionnaire or letter of reference identifying your performance according to prescribed criteria such as initiative, team work and advocacy for clients. (Please note that for September 2004, the 80 hour volunteer placement will no longer be mandatory. However, for your own program readiness, we recomment that you complete some type of prior volunteer experience.)
