experience to the student. Academic backgrounds range from Education, Psychology,
Sociology to Child and Youth Work, Social Work and Information Technology. Each
Professor is thoroughly committed to the success of every student. We look forward to

Jean Sauvé -Program
Coordinator/Professor
Jean has been at Algonquin College for the past 34 years. During that time,
he has written two books and a number of student manuals all dealing with the theoretical
and practical aspects of frontline work. His particular area of interest is therapeutic
programming. Ideologically, Jean leans towards cognitive-behavioural thinking. Jean holds
degrees in Sociology/Anthropology, a Masters degree in Online Education, diplomas in Adult
Education and Developmental Service Work. Jean is a certified Web Designer with extensive
training in programming and networking. He is also certified as a personal
trainer specialist with interests in sports training and life coaching. For
the past 6 years, Jean has enjoyed volunteering as a mental health crisis worker at the
Ottawa Distress Centre.

Donna Serafini -Second
and Third Year Field Coordinator/Professor
I am pleased to be celebrating my 20th year as a faculty member
of the Child and Youth Worker program this year! My training and experience includes
criminology, education, counselling and family support as a front-line CYW, an educator,
an advocate and volunteer in the community. I have served as a board member and/or chair
for Youth Services Bureau, Nelson House, Merivale Co-Operative Nursery School, YM-YWCA,
Eastern Ontario Young Offenders Services and Ottawa Youth Justice Services Network. I have
also been involved in the college community in developing the Peer Support Center, Student
Success Committee, Traumatic Response Team and Orientation Volunteer. I look forward
to supporting your development throughout our time together and all that you bring to the
experience! |

Jane Trakalo - Professor
Jane joined the CYW faculty in September 2000 as
a professor. She has worked in the field of social services for over 20 years
and started her career as a front line CYW with high risk youth in residential care.
Jane is a registered social worker and has had an extensive career working with at
risk youth and their families as a front line child protection worker and a supervisor.
Jane is a certified trainer of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and holds a Bachelor
and Master Degree in Social Work from McGill University as well as a BA is social
sciences. Jane has also studied mediation and holds a Graduate Certificate in
Conflict Resolution from the Faculty of Law at Carleton University. Jane is
currently affiliated with Family Services a la famillie Ottawa, where she is a facilitator
in their Family Life Education programs. Jane is also involved in the community as a
volunteer mediator for the Collaborative Justice Program delivered by the Ministry of the
Attorney General. |

Vicki Grisim - Dissertation
Coordinator/Professor
Vicki joined the faculty as a professor in January, 2005. She is a graduate of the Humber College Child
Youth Worker Program. While Vicki has a wide
range of professional experience, her expertise is in counselling high risk youth and
their families. Her counselling approaches tend to be ecclectic, however, she favours
cognitive behavioural interventions. Vicki holds an honours B.A. in psychology and a
Masters degree in education from the University of Ottawa. |
