Welcome to the Child and Youth Worker Outdoor
Activities Program
All CYW students will experience 2 outdoor experiences, each lasting 5 consecutive days at
Harris Lodge near Mont St Marie. The main goal of Outdoor Activity is to provide students
with necessary skills to conduct therapeutic outdoor activities with children and youth.
Outdoor Activities I takes place in year 2
during the third week of the fall semester. Through lectures, demonstrations and
experiential learning, students are introduced to fire building, outdoor cooking, erecting
tents and shelters, canoeing, portaging and basic water and outdoor safety. Outdoor Activites II takes place in year 3 during
the month of February. This second course builds on the skills learned in the previous
OAC. Students add to their outdoor skills by building winter shelters and developing cross
country skiing and snowshoing skills.. Prior to the outdoor experience, students will
fill in a number of forms including a medical document. Participants are divided int
groups and will be attached to a college facilitator. Then, on the designated date on a
Monday morning all students hop on the bus with all necessary equipment and travel to Mont St Marie
for 5 days of fun and camaraderie. Students always thoroughly enjoy this experience....
