REFUSAL MEMORANDUM

Below is a memo that I received recently from someone at Algonquin College who has a much higher position at the college than I do.

1.  Background

2.  Your Task

Your task is to respond to the following memo and refuse to hire his daughter.  Be sensitive about it.  Make sure the explanation is thorough.  Deemphasize the bad news using at least two techniques.

FYI, attached is a summary of qualifications required for the position as outlined in the advertisement.

MEMORANDUM
To: Nicholas Strachan
From: John Doe, Dean of ________________
Subject: Teaching Assistantship Position
Date: October 26, 2004

I understand that you are currently accepting resumes for the position of Teacher’s Assistant to help you with your on-line course, ENL2000 - Business, Community and Society.  My daughter, Jane, is very interested in this position.

As you’ll notice from the enclosed resume, my daughter is in her final year of high school at Lisgar Collegiate where she has maintained an "A" average. She has extremely strong computer skills, which is important since I believe ENL2000 - Business, Community and Society course is an on-line course. Jane is comfortable using Microsoft Office, Corel 2000, Front Page, Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. She has never used Blackboard, but I’m certain she would learn it quickly if given the opportunity.

If you would like to meet Jane in order to assess her suitability as a candidate for the position, I can ask her to meet with you one day after classes. You can contact me directly at extension XXXX, or drop by my office any time to arrange an interview with her.

I look forward to hearing from you.  And good luck with your semester!
