AESTHETICS AND COMPOSITION IN VISUAL MEDIA

MODULE DESCRIPTION

Module 1, Aesthetics and Composition in Visual Media, examines various theories of aesthetics and composition to determine why we find certain painting, photography, sketches, etc. visually appealing. In this 15-hour module, students will use on-line resource materials to study theories of aesthetics and composition, test the ideas using samples of visual art, and complete an analytical and creative project.

Students have the opportunity to apply the concepts in the world of advertising.

The completion time for the module is six weeks.

  • analyse a piece visual art or advertising that reflects accepted theories and ideas
  • conduct on-line and other research to learn about theories of composition and aesthetics
  • appreciate composition in the visual arts
  • consider the effects of composition on aesthetics
  • create a piece visual art or advertising that reflects accepted theories and ideas
  • use technology with skill and confidence
  • exercise creative and analytical abilities

The following will provide evidence of your learning achievement:

Progress Email Memorandum Assignment

Analytical Assignment research and produce a short report explaining and testing the theories of composition studied in the module. The report will require the student the organize information from a variety of sources, report using visual, numerical, and narrative data, and write at the college level.

Creative Assignment design and produce a piece of visual "art" from a range of options including photography, advertising, brochures, fine art, etc., applying the theories of composition studied in the module.
