Overview

Web Pages with HTML

• Text (writing or importing) --> .html documents
• Images (which remain separate) --->.gif , .jpg or .png documents
• Move the text and images to a web server so that other people can see it

Issues:

• Even simple web sites include many documents (.html and images) -- one must look at the web site rather than at the individual page
• References to images are hard coded into documents
• Laborious to make changes
• Different browsers and monitor settings are controlled by the viewer
• Web pages are not 8 1/2" by 11"
• Many different ways to create .html

Why we are using FrontPage

• Editor to ease the web creation process
  • word-processor interface
  • creates local copy of your work (view locally before moving to web)
  • helps saving of related images correctly, so that text can find them
• Explorer
  • web site management
  • eases maintenance (file and directory changes)
  • features that relate to all pages on a site
    • common borders
    • templates

Review Web Publishing Process

• Creation of pages consisting of text and images (using an editor)
  Our strategy for to-day:  Open an existing site and create a page (or two) within an existing set of borders
• Create and maintain web sites (in the future)
• with our help, publish to a directory on the College web server (intranet or external website)

Use FrontPage Explorer

• Open an existing web (a:\testdept)
• Turn on common borders as default for the whole web
• Recognize where the images come from on this page
  (from a directory on the webserver)
• Add Menu Items to the site to reflect this structure:

Use FrontPage Editor

• Open an existing page (template.htm)
  • recognize javascript required to control look and feel of page (in HTML view)
• Recognize common borders (turn on and off in Tools)
• Create a new page
• Use Text

    • Size
    • Font Style
    • Colour
• Create lists

• Insert images

  • images left on the Internet (from the Picture Gallery on the website)

  • link to download a document (example:  an assignment in WordPerfect)
• Import a document from WordPerfect

  • create links to bookmarks and pages on your site
• Create other pages on the site
  • provide navigation
    • common borders (only one set on web)
    • links between pages (Return to home)
